The New York Times has a tour-the-city feature about the Derby City, called 36 hours in Louisville, which, in addition to all the usual attraction, plugs Louisville’s music scene. Brief but thank you very much, anyway. Mentioned are Will Oldham, Slint and My Morning Jacket (of course) plus Wax Fang, Cheyenne Mize, Seluah and Joe Manning.

Catching up with this week’s neo LEO, we find Mat Herron interviewing the Scissor Sisters, which band is opening for Lady Gaga on Saturday at the Yum! David Serchuk has an lengthy article on the Louisville Orchestra situation, including a look at the Louisville Orchestra Foundation, which has seen its portfolio fall considerably over the last three years. Finally, Matt Sullivan reviews the new Minnow CD, Hello Hubris.

Over at Velocity, which this week has a very music-heavy issue, Joe Lord has a solid article on Gill Holland and sonaBlast! Records, particularly noting the different business model the label is running with. Jeffrey Puckett also writes up the Scissor Sisters, while noting the Lexington connection within the band. (That article ran in the C-J yesterday.) Lord also has an overview of several Louisville bands that have been making some noise of late, including, of course, MMJ, The Pass, Wax Fang, The Fervor, Bukshot, Broken Spurs, Whistle Peak, the Deloreans, the Ladybirds, Renzo Charlez, and Lydia Burrell. Joe Lord also wrote a story on the resurgence of video in the music scene. (Joe really earned his paycheck this week.)

Wax Fang’s “The Astronaut Pt. 1” scored a review on American Songwriter blog.

Check out the photo on the front page of Wax Fang’s new website. Those guys sure do like to ‘dress’ up!

Lots has been happening for Louisvillians in the national music scene, lead by MMJ, of course, which gets the most items in the news. Here are a few other folks making their way in the business but out-of-town:

Jukebox the Ghost, featuring Louisville native Ben Thornewill, played the CMJ 2010 Fest in New York, at a club called the Bowery Electric. A tune of theirs is included CMJ 2010 Free Songs via Spinner.com. JTG is on tour with Barenaked Ladies, which tour is currently headed to Texas.
The Phantom Family Halo played their first show in New York at a club called Coco 66 in Brooklyn.

The ex-pats in VHS or Beta, who are currently residing in New York, played a gig in Brooklyn on October 30. Haven’t seen a review, though.

Rachel Grimes is still gallivanting around Europe, looking ahead to a show on November 14 in Cork.

Wax Fang is still in town, and, unfortunately, had a bad experience with the sound system at the MMJ show at the Yum! Center (reviewed here, here and especially at youaintnopicasso.com with photos), but their recently released, 17-minute song “The Astronaut” is getting reviewed around the country. Yep – just the song; the rest of the new CD is not yet released.
James Kottak and the Scorpions are back in Europe on their extended ‘Farewell’ tour. Check out this video from Nantes on October 22.

Joan Osborne continues to work around the country, having just played a show with Leroy Bell in Seattle. You should be so lucky as to be her kind of ‘one-hit’ wonder. Read this review of Joan’s handling of a boorish heckler at a show in Portland.

Paul K. just announced several gigs, icluding a gig on November 11 in Louisville at the Sound Horse Conference. Kopasz winds up with a show at a union hall in Brooklyn on December 12.
Have I mentioned MMJ? They played The Voodoo Fest in New Orleans (review here.) right after their show at the Yum! Arena (Check out this fan video of Jim James dressed as Col Sanders.) At the New Orleans gig, James announced that that performance would be the last from the band for a while.

Missed posting this one yesterday – Wax Fang has a free download of the 17-minute long tune “The Astronaut” for the price of your email. You Ain’t No Picasso has the link.

Cheyenne Mize clearly has her publicist working overtime and successfully. Following the recent rave-up in the New York Times, this week’s LEO has a big story about the violinist/singer/songwriter, written by Mat Herron.. Elsewhere, Herron plugs with TechN9ne and E-40. T. E. Lyons previews the Gonzo Fest at the Monkey Wrench on Saturday

Over at the C-J, J. L. Puckett writes about Wax Fang’s epic 17-minute “The Astronaut (Part 1),” scheduled for digital release on Removador Records on Oct. 19. Puckett also has posted several videos from Solomon Burke.

Here’s a video of Mize at an ear X-tacy show: <object width="250" height="150"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/aGwnZE006IY?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/aGwnZE006IY?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="250" height="150" align="left"></embed></object>

There’s a 1 p.m. press conference at ear X-tacy concerning an upcoming show at the Yum! Arena featuring My Morning Jacket. We’ll fill you in as soon as the news is official.

My Morning Jacket will be performing with the Louisville Youth Orchestra at the Yum! Arena on October 29. Wax Fang will open. MMJ will donate $1 from each ticket to the LYO. Tickets will be $45 general admission and will go on sale on August 14
There will be a special General Admission sale at ear x-tacy two days before the show.

From a review of the Dot to Dot Festival in Bristol, on www.clashmusic.com: “Never mind, eh? Here come Wax Fang, armed with a theremin. With only a short set, the three-piece do what any self-respecting band with a theremin would do: they go big and loud and ultra-prog. And you know what? It works. They play maybe four songs, each roughly a year long, but with mesmerising intensity. Singer Scott Carney does a second solo let, later in the day, at the marvellous Rise Records and it’s… not so hot. It’s an OK acoustic set, but pales in comparison to the epic performance the band put on here. ”

Plus another post on the same site: “Leaving them to rock the University crowds, it’s time to head downtown to the Deaf Institute, where a small audience are gathered for Kentucky’s Wax Fang, who are giving a virtuoso display in musicianship. There’s space to breathe in here, which makes for a great relief after today’s push and shove. The trio’s electrifying, operatic style is incredibly enjoyable live, with songs like ‘World War II, pt2’ showcasing lead singer/guitarist Scott Carney’s incredibly guitar playing, recalls Brian May at his best, while drummer Kevin Ratterman reminds me of Animal from the Muppets at his percussive best, and Jacob Heustis is an equally impressive bassist.”

And finally, this review from www.suityourselfmagazine.co.uk: “Wax Fang at The Cooler seemed an interesting prospect – a noisy three-piece from Kentucky USA play a popular breed of heavy indie-rock with a twist, the twist being the ferocious sound they utilise from just guitar, bass and drums – and of course the always fun Theremin; it’s just what you need to wake you up for the rest of the day.”

Dawn Landes got this review of a show in Glasgow. “”WE PROBABLY have as many beers backstage as there are people here,” noted Kentucky girl Dawn Landes. Clearly she isn’t scared of playing a gig which might best be described as intimate – always a pleasing trait in a performer. In return for such enduring good cheer, the couple of dozen fans in attendance greeted her with real warmth and appreciation.” There’s more in the review.

Maybe it’s just the spirit of the times or it might be just the particular writer but here’s a post about All Tomorrow’s Parties, with a item about Wax Fang plus many assorted side snarks.
