Animals As Leaders Headline At Diamond Pub

May 212014

Were you not in touch, you might think Animals As Leaders would be a thrashing, screaming around the stage, balls-to-the-wall metal band. On the metal part, you would be right and you could be forgiven if you were not in touch with exactly who or what Animals As Leaders is. The short answer is a suddenly hot progressive instrumental band that mines the metal genre but which some might think was jazz/rock fusion. Bandleader Tosin Abasi, who came out of the defunct metal band Reflux, spent a year studying guitar before forming AAL in 2007. Just shows you what a little education will do. AAL is the leading a pack of bands, including Littledidweknow, Chon and Conquering Dystopia, into Diamond Pub on May 25. There’s a new AAL album, The Joy Of Motion – only the band’s third release, on Sumerian Records – which debuted at No. 23 on Billboard. Along the way, there has been a lot of touring, including in the 2010 Summer Slaughter Tour and a couple of European tours. Altogether, this looks like a show to see for metal fans. Tickets are $18.

Watch this video for “Lippincott” from Joy Of Motion. (The graphics would not be out of place at any prog rock show since the Seventies.)
