There’s something about a solid power trio that seems to anchor a band – noting the specification of “solid.” For the alt-rock trio Better Than Ezra, that solidlity might well have come from the shock of their lead guitarist’s suicide back in 1990, which cemented the band as a trio. Their first major release, Deluxe, hit No. 1 in 1995, after which came the usual churning of labels, followed by being dropped and winding up on a small label, which closed shortly after the release of their fourth album, Closer, which wound up not being released for seven years. More recently, Taylor Swift covered one of their tunes on a TV performance, which gave them a much-needed boost. Heading into the Mercury Ballroom on Saturday, November 22, they have a just-released album, All Together Now, on The End Records, making their output total seven studio albums. An outfit called Seven Handle Circus will open. Tickets are $25.

Taylor Swift

The twenty-three-year-old Taylor Swift must have really had a fine time at the Yum! Center, and, perhaps, in Louisville, when she was here, as she will be making her third stop at the arena on the river on May 7, with British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran opening. Swift has lived up to her last name with regards to her ascent in the Nashville music hierarchy, with awards by the bucketload (seven Grammys, eleven American Music Awards, seven Country Music Association Awards,  six Academy of Country Music Awards) and four best-selling albums to date, including the most recent, Red, which is also the name of her current tour. A staple of the celebrity gossip media, Swift has achieved feats sufficient to get Sheeran, who has also been rocketing up the career ladder, to open for her. Tickets range from $32.50 to $88.50, if any are left by this time.
Here’s her “I Knew You Were Trouble” vid:

You really have to feel for J. L. Puckett, that long-time lover of Seventies soul, for having to go and review Taylor Swift’s show at the Yum! Center. He did a yeoman’s job, which focused on technique and showmanship, the audience, Swift’s stage chops and listed some of the songs she played. Also that the few men in attendance were happy to have the restrooms to themselves.
