My Morning Jacket drummer Patrick Hallahan and his new band, Spanish Gold, get the headlining spot for WFPK’s Waterfront Wednesday show on May 28. The upside for Hallahan is that membership in MMJ (and the associated fan base) will transfer to his new band, at least for this show, but there’s a bit of downside as well: the band’s first album, South Of Nowhere, has only just dropped and the all tunes the band will be playing will be relatively new to the Louisville audience, though some will be a bit familiar via WFPK. Word is that it’s a straight-ahead summer rock album and with a couple of Texans for bandmates, the flavoring should be quite different from MMJ. Also on the bill are The Broken Spurs and Peter Searcy’s reunited Starbilly, which will make it absolutely a roots rock ‘n’ roll show, which is not your routine FPK lineup. Wear your dancing shoe, to be sure. It’s a free show, of course.

Here’s “Out On The Street,” from the new record:

My Morning Jacket drummer Patrick Hallahan’s new side project, Spanish Gold, will play the Late Show with David Letterman on June 3. (Of course, you can hear them live on May 28 at Waterfront Wednesday.) Besides Hallahan, Spanish Gold is guitarist Adrian Quesada (Brownout) and Dante Schwebel (City and Colour). Their debut album, South of Nowhere, is due out May 27 via BMG/Del Mar Records.
