Okay, the duo of Rodrigo Y Gabriela doesn’t have any Louisville connections – other than a big fan base – but since I are one of them there fans (and the writer of this blog), I get to decide. Here’s a audio only video of a one of the live shows set to be included on the new CD.
No RodGab After All
RodGab at Headliners
RodGab and the Full Brown
Short review: Rodrigo y Gabriela came to the Brown Theatre on Sunday night and made the full house happy and awed. Comments ran the gamut of all the adjectives available to describe outstanding performances, followed mostly by head shaking, with particular emphasis on Gabriela’s right hand, which seriously impressed the musicians in the audience. The videos of their shows fail to do their performances justice. Phenomenal. Odd side note: the clapping that was encouraged by the pair was remarkably crisp and on beat, unlike the usual raggedness that crowd clap-alongs normally exhibit, which likely attests to the high percentage of musically trained people in the audience. Just about wore me out with joy.
The Friday Touts
Fridays are noted for reading the C-J to see if there are any music stories that I haven’t already read elsewhere. Usually, not much. This Friday, however, J. L. Puckett has the front page of the Features section with a story about ‘replacement’ music for boomers – music that boomers can listen to that sounds almost just like the music they were listening to when they were young. It’s an idea.
Meanwhile, Joe Lord has a preview of the RodGab show at the Brown; Puckett has a long story on The Darlins, one of whom spent time in Louisville and Joe Lord has a preview of the Fruit Bats’ show (details) Monday at the Zanzabar.
Now, back to the Internets…A day late but not a dollar short, here’s what’s in this week’s print:
Mat Herron has a piece on Paducah’s Bawn in the Mash, set for several shows in Louisville this weekend. Herron also has a preview piece on Rodrigo y Gabriela, who are playing a not-to-be-missed show at the Brown on Sunday. LMN Jazzin’ columnist Marty Kasdan has a review of Toots Thielemanss’ show at U of L. Finally, Brent Owen reviews the Ben Sollee/Daniel Martin Moore show.
Rodrigo y Gabriela
The astounding guitar duo of Rodrigo y Gabriela will be at the Brown Theatre on March 7; expect to see lots of musicians for that show, as the pair are simply impressive. (Your humble editor has birthday-present tickets.) They have a new CD, 11:11, which has been getting plenty of airplay. For some solid background, there’s an article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has worth a read.
Here’s a video of their version ofZowie! All the musicians I know should be at the Brown on March 7 for Rodrigo y Gabriela, even at $35 a ticket. On sale January 15, 10 a.m. If you aren’t familiar with these two, then you should be. Here’s a video them playing “Tamacun.”
