The Return of Here Come The Mummies, Part Deux

The Nashville incognito R&B/Funk band Here Come The Mummies return again to Louisville for the second time this year, on December 5, at the Mercury Ballroom. As has been noted here before, there is not much known about this band, other than their refusal to reveal much. The rumors are rampant – it’s a band of Nashville pros, including Grammy winners, who are avoiding conflicts with record labels by appearing under wraps. That’s the main one. Not that it really matters, since they are a tight, funky band of pros, regardless of their legal entanglements. They do have a new album, Cryptic, for your listening pleasure. For $20 adv,/$22 Dos, you can go hear them play and wonder how they manage under all that costuming. I mean, imagine the sweating!

WFPK’s favorite “local” performer, Lexingtonian Ben Sollee brings his cello to the Bomhard Theatre on November 1. Essentially a cello-playing singer-songwriter, Sollee has made a considerable career out of hauling his cello on a bicycle and championing various good causes, as well as making music folks like. His latest record is The Hollow Sessions. You can hear him as well on November 2 at Comstock Hall at the School of Music at 3p. Either show is $25.

Here’s Sollee playing “Letting Go”:

An Official Forecastle Late Night After-Party At Headliners With St. Paul And The Broken Bones

But [lead singer Paul] Janeway’s distinct, clean-cut look is the least important detail in The Gospel of the Broken Bones. Taking cues from his church choir background and emulating greats like Marvin Gaye and Otis Redding, a performance from St. Paul and the Broken Bones is completely uninhibited—the kind of transcendent experience that will leave you eager to share your vision of the light in the days that follow. – Dacey Orr, Paste.com”
St. Paul And The Broken Bones make their third stop in Louisville this year when they pop into Headliners on July 18 for an Official Forecastle Fest Late Night show. Clearly, this is a show for the young and very hardy or else the insomniacs of any age, since it starts … umm… late; in this case, midnight. As we have mentioned earlier, you have a seven-piece band with a horn section and a hefty white boy with glasses and natty jacket singing; you know you’ve got yourself some version of a soul band. Yes, sir. The new record is Half A City, which might their goal for total turnout to their shows in Louisville this year. Curtis Harding will open; tickets are $20 adv / $22 Dos. Take some No-Doz when you go.
Give a listen to the band live, singing “Grass Is Greener”:

Charles Bradley And His Extraordinaires Land At Headliners

Apr 202014

The self-proclaimed Screaming Eagle of Soul, Charles Bradley, brings his Extraordinaires to Headliners on April 24. Having done a stint as a James Brown impersonator in the Nineties, Bradley learned all the necessary chops to be a serious funk/R&B singer. He was discovered by a co-founder of Dap Records, who signed him following a session with his future producer Tom Brenneck, during which he asked Brenneck’s band to play while he made up lyrics on the spot. Following the release of a string of singles from 2002 to 2010, his debut album, No Time For Dreaming, was released in 2011, his second, Victim Of Love, dropped in 2013. He’s been through town a couple of times before, so there should be some fans. If his style still isn’t clear to you, watch the video below. Tickets to the show are $18 adv/ $20 DoS.

Once a performer has racked up multiple Grammy Awards, it begins to be pointless to cover his career in a promo piece – he’s already well-known to possible concertgoers. John Legend certainly qualifies, having scored nine of the gold statues for his songwriting, collaborating and performing. Even before his first record, 2004’s Get Lifted, he was an in-demand collaborator, working with a long string of famous R&B, soul, and pop musicians. His latest, Love In The Future, debuted at #4 on the Billboard Charts and and has been nominated for Best R&B Album for the 2014 Grammy Awards. He’ll be singing that song and lots more at his concert at Horseshoe Southern Indiana on April 10. Tickets are $49.50, $54.50 and $69.50

Here’s “All OF Me” from the new record:

The Best Of Anthony Hamilton – Himself – At The Palace

Concerts, LMNEditor, Previews, R&B, Video  Comments Off on The Best Of Anthony Hamilton – Himself – At The Palace
Feb 112014

Anthony Hamilton
One of the prerequisites for ultimate fame as a vocalist seems to be membership in a church choir at a young age. Root around in the biography of almost any really fine singer and there you’ll find a gospel choir, harmonies and all. This seems especially true with R&B singers; Anthony Hamilton is one of those. A singer-songwriter and record producer, his post-choir path to musical fame was laid by his second studio album, 2003’s Comin’ From Where I’m From, which yielded both the title track and “Charlene” as hit singles. Louisvillians might not know but should know that he sang in the chorus for Nappy Roots’ 2002 hit single “Po’ Folks.” His collaboration with the Nappy Roots crew continued with three more singles from Wooden Leather and one from The Humdinger. His career has been built over the last ten years from many more such collaborations. He is currently touring as a headlining performer, with 2011’s Back To Love driving the set list. He’ll be at the Palace Theatre on February 15, with Lelah James opening. Tickets are $37.50-$42.50

Mayer Hawthorne

Mayer Hawthorne wears a lot of hats in the music business, including as a singer, songwriter, producer, arranger, audio engineer, DJ, rapper and multi-instrumentalist. When he’s on tour, though, he’s a soul and neo-soul singer with a strong liking for Sixties and Seventies-era R&B in the style of Holland-Dozier-Holland. Hawthorne has been on Conan and the Letterman show recently, as well as having a variety of guest spots on other TV shows, plus songs in various shows. He didn’t really set out to be an artist but was prevailed upon to try it out. Now he has four albums to his credit plus a long list of singles. His most recent, Where Does This Door Go, was released in July. He’ll appear at Headliners, along with Superhumanoids on September 19. Tickets are $18.
