Bowling Green’s (with Louisville connections) Nappy Roots return to the Derby City for a concert at the Mercury Ballroom on July 17. It’s a been quite the ride for the Kentucky alternative rap crew, from the highs in the early years of this century, when their albums Watermelon, Chicken & Gritz and Wooden Leather spawned hits and they were the best-selling rap group in the country. Since then it’s been up and down, with their records selling less well, though they continue to tour. Their most recent project, Nappy Dot Org, is still the album driving their tour. Tickets for the Mercury Ballroom show will cost you $32  plus fees.

Here’s “Good And Evil” from Nappy Dot Org:

Nappy Roots
The Nappy Roots crew will be back in town – after a year’s absence – for a show at the Phoenix Hill Tavern on November 30. The twice Grammy-nominated crew is now down to four – Skinny DeVille, Buffalo Stille, Ron Cluth and Fish Scales – and they continue on their independent path, with the most recent release Sh!t’s Beautiful out in 2012. The single “Aint Gon Stop” was released in December 2012. The crew continues to tour extensively, with the stop at PHT adding a Nappy feel to the Thanksgiving week selection of shows. Check with the Phoenix Hill for ticket info.

Nappy Roots - These Walls Revisited
A decade back, Nappy Roots released their album Wooden Leather, which included a Kanye West track called “These Walls.” Now, the group has revisited that song for its 10th anniversary.

Buffalo Stille said in a statement “[Nappy Roots Entertainment Group Vice President] Jonathan Hay approached me with this concept years ago to redo this song and I was all for it, as I’ve always known it could’ve been better. This is one of my favourite hooks I’ve ever written and I like it even more since it’s been revisited. It was great to work with Kanye and I’d love to work with him again. This is a great ten-year anniversary record.” This version was co-produced by Hay and Michael A. Smith.

Kenneth Ryan Anthony, whose stage name is R. Prophet, was arrested by Kentucky State troopers outside of Elizabethtown on Monday night for resisting arrest at a traffic safety checkpoint. The arrest required multiple instances of tasing of Anthony by troopers. The Louisville native first achieved fame as a member of Nappy Roots and has left the group five years ago to begin a solo career. WHAS TV has the story.
