UPDATE: The Facebooks are a wonderful place to stand corrected, or at least, updated: Doug Florio has been playing with a new partner, Christine Devore (Pinnick) for a month or so. Send more news if you have it.

Word has it that Kimmet Cantwell is leaving the Derby City for Chicago. There’s a significant guitar-player friend there. I hear, so no more Kimmet and Doug, either.

Monarchs - Appearing Here Tonight

The Monarchs have a new CD, Appearing Here Tonight. Even though they’re down to only two original members – Louis “Dusty” Miller and Leon Middleton, they still have that Monarchs sound. The CD is a collection of standards, a Tim Krekel Song and a couple of originals from the band. Check it out at http://www.themonarchs.com/

Kentucky Headhunters - Live - Agora Ballroom

The Kentucky Headhunters always qualify as a Louisville band, even if only Greg Martin is from here. They have just released Live /Agora Ballroom, a ‘never-before-released’ recording of a live show at the Agora Ballroom, Cleveland, Ohio, May 13, 1990. They picked that one because they thought that was when they sounded their best. Good idea.

Then there’s this box of three 45 RPM vinyl records, labeled 1069, after a 70s-era punk house at 1069 Bardstown Road that was occupied at various times by the members of the band, also known as 1069. It’s a project by Steve Rigot, who, if memory serves, went by the nickname of Chile (or Chili). Also in the band are Michael O’Bannon, from the Blinders and brother of Wink; Sandy Campbell, also in the Blinders and Van Campbell, from the Black Diamond Heavies. Available at ear X-tacy Records.

Rachel Grimes, pianist, composer and significant part of Rachel’s, has a new CD, Book Of Leaves, for solo piano. This is fourteen tracks of Grimes’ ethereal piano compositions.

This one is sure to excite the musicians in town: now you can play for free – nada, zip, nil – at Stevie Ray’s on Thursdays. You do get the use of the sound system and sound man. If you can draw enough people in, you might get booked for a paying gig. Manager Todd Webster’s explanation was straightforward – he can’t make enough money paying bands on Thursdays.

At least he’s not asking bands to pay to play – yet.

Bellarmine instructor and percussionist Yaya Diallo got a very nice writeup in the C-J today. Diallo, a native of Mali, was in that country recently, where he is working to create a cultural center outside of the village of Bamako. If you’d like to hear him, he’ll perform traditional Malian music on August 29 at 7 p.m. at Bellarmine University’s Amy Cralle Theater in Wilson W. Wyatt Hall. Tickets are $10. Alternately, you could enroll in one of his classes and learn his style of percussion.

It’s clear that while Coyote’s is no longer operating as a bar, it is still operating as a venue, meaning some shows are still being booked there. It this case, that means Queensryche on October 15. Tickets go on sale August 15 on Ticketmaster.com

JJ Grey and Mofro plus Shooter Jennings and Earl Greyhound will be at Headliners on October 7, according to a press release from Production Simple. It’s an eighteen-and-over show, tickets are $20 and go on sale Friday, August 14 at 10 a.m.

Driving past the Vernon Club yesterday, I noticed that Maia Sharp was booked there for Friday. While I had noted that she was scheduled for WFPK’s “Live Lunch” on Friday, I had somehow missed the Vernon Club show. Drat! Already committed to be elsewhere. Anyway, tickets are $15.

Here’s a video of “Polite Society.”
