Hard Working Americans At Headliners

Back in 2013, singer Todd Snider put together a band he calls Hard Working Americans, which is bassist Dave Schools from Widespread Panic, Neal Casal of Chris Robinson Brotherhood on guitar and vocals, Chad Staehly of Great American Taxi on keyboards and Duane Trucks, younger brother to Derek on drums: that is  to say, rather of a rock supergroup. They’ve mostly been touring but stopped long enough to put out a self-title debut album at the beginning of this year. Snider, of course, has a long history as a singer-songwriter with a more-or-less cult following: he’s been here a bunch of times. The band also has a rockumentary called “The First Waltz,” which was just released. It’s available at the website plus all the usual places. The new band will be at Headliners Music Hall on December 14. Tickets are $25. Should be interesting.
Here’s a live version of “Wrecking Ball”:

:Pop Evil has made Louisville a favorite stop since at least 2008, when they played a Phoenix Hill show; they repeated that stop nearly ten times, before playing the Louder Than Life Festival in September. Now they’re back, but at the Mercury Ballroom this time, on December 12. They’ve got a fan base and they’re still supporting their latest record, Onyx, which also lends its name to the tour – Oynx Set In Stone Tour, so expect a nice turn-out. Islander and Red Sun Rising are supporting the show. Tickets are $15.

Boney James and Stanley Jordan at the Palace

Concerts, Jazz, LMNEditor, Previews, Video  Comments Off on Boney James and Stanley Jordan at the Palace
Dec 082014

Louisville jazz fans constantly complain that national jazz acts don’t come here nearly often enough, so the news that saxophonist Boney James will appear with jazz fusion guitarist Stanley Jordan at the Louisville Palace on December 12, should make them take a break from bitching. Of course, that would suppose that jazz fans weren’t as hard-nosed as bluegrass fans can be about their favorites, which, unfortunately, they are are: James is a contemporary jazz musician, so he gets counted in as a smooth jazz player with the likes of Kenny G. The Boston Globe has a comment about that: “Let’s make something perfectly clear: James is not a smooth jazz player. Yeah, he is often grouped with people like Kenny G and Najee, but his music is muscular and gritty, whereas most smooth jazz has all the texture and complexity of a cue ball…James swaggered across the stage like a blacktop hero draining treys on an overmatched opponent. He even weaved his way through the audience, never missing a beat and all but daring the crowd not to have a good time.” Besides, he’s playing with Stanley Jordan and if that’s not enough to stop them from cooking up a bitches brew of complaints, then they’re just too damn picky. Tickets range from $39.99 to $75, plus fees.

Here’s a clip from the Montreux Jazz Festival with James

Enumeration Of A Murder At The Louisville Palace

Concerts, LMNEditor, Previews, Rock, Video  Comments Off on Enumeration Of A Murder At The Louisville Palace
Dec 082014

It comes as no surprise to Corvus fans that the collective term for a crowd of same is a murder, but to others, well, a murder of crows is just a geeky term to use in a bar contest or, as in this case, a way of playfully hiding the name of the band playing at the Palace, to wit, Counting Crows, on December 10. Okay, it’s not original, but any reference to a popular performing act with a slightly odd name isn likely to be well-used. This very well-known group rock band is touring in support of their new record, Somewhere Under Wonderful, which also is also referential, in this case, to a stage musical co-authored by frontman Adam Duritz and playwright Stephen Beiber. With twenty million copies of their seven studio records sold in the twenty-three years of their existence, there’s not a lot to prove, so head on down an enjoy a very professional band rocking out. Tickets are $29-$85. Twin Forks will open.

Watch “Palisades Park” from the new record:

Cherokee rapper Yelawolf will perform at the Mercury Ballroom on December 7, in advance of the release of his second album on Eminem’s Shady Records, Love Story, which has been in the works since 2012. Although his earliest success was as a contract artist painting murals, he subsequently took up the microphone to rap, releasing a couple of mixtapes, which went generally unnoticed, other than getting him some interest from a label. He wound up on Eminem’s label and was involved in a number of collaborations, including with Ed Sheeran, Travis Barker of Blink-182 and Eminem. His albums to this point are Trunk Muzik 0-60, Radioactive and Psycho White, which will provide some of the material for the show, plus whatever he’s trying out for the new record. Tickets to the show are $20.

Chase Rice at Mercury Ballroom

If jambands and screaming rockers aren’t to your taste, then perhaps a bit of bro-country (which is just to the right of rock), courtesy of singer-songwriter Chase Rice will suit you. Rice has not quite achieved the level of fame that he clearly seeks (he was a contestant on Survivor: Nicaragua, where was a runner-up.), though he’s made a pretty good start at it: he scored a bit of songwriting success with “Cruise,” which Georgia-Florida Line released and the first single, “Ready Set Roll” from his new record, Ignite The Night, reeleased this August, went gold, while Ignite the Night debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Country Album Chart. It’s also the name of the tour. He’s now three albums into a country music career, with Country As Me and Dirt Road Communion released in 2011 and 2012, respectively. Should he be able to continue the string, he might be playing Yum! next, so if you’re a fan, head on down to the Mercury Ballroom on Saturday, November 28 and see what you think of his live show. Tickets are $20 adv plus fees.
