Hard Working Americans At Headliners

Dec 112014

Back in 2013, singer Todd Snider put together a band he calls Hard Working Americans, which is bassist Dave Schools from Widespread Panic, Neal Casal of Chris Robinson Brotherhood on guitar and vocals, Chad Staehly of Great American Taxi on keyboards and Duane Trucks, younger brother to Derek on drums: that is  to say, rather of a rock supergroup. They’ve mostly been touring but stopped long enough to put out a self-title debut album at the beginning of this year. Snider, of course, has a long history as a singer-songwriter with a more-or-less cult following: he’s been here a bunch of times. The band also has a rockumentary called “The First Waltz,” which was just released. It’s available at the website plus all the usual places. The new band will be at Headliners Music Hall on December 14. Tickets are $25. Should be interesting.
Here’s a live version of “Wrecking Ball”:

From Oxford, England comes Glass Animals, billing themselves as an idie rock, psychedelic pop, trip hop band. They’re a brand new outfit, with one album, Zaba, to their credit and plenty of balls, as they’ve headed to the States in the middle of an European tour, booking shows as they tour. They’ll stop at Headliners on Tuesday, December 2 for a show, which, if it strikes your fancy, will cost only $12 adv/$15 Dos. To help you decide, check out the video or Soundcloud link below:

The Werks Jam At Headliners

Is there an unending appetite for jambands in Louisville? Promoters and club bookers seem to think so, as there is a pretty steady stream of said bands through town. For the Friday after Thanksgiving, you can headband it over to Headliners for an evening of genre-hopping improvization from Dayton’s own The Werks, which is all-you-can-dance, musical cafe style. Now, back in the olden days (the Aughts), bands were measured in part by the chart action of their records. The Werks big claim to fame is that in 2011, they were the number 2 top searched aritsts on Jam Magazine, behind only Phish. In 2012, they were Number 1. Well, take your plaudits where you may. They have a couple of new records: The Mr. Smalls Sessions, released in September and Dark Side OF The Moon, a co-performance with Dopapod and Papdosio. They have all the right markers, see? Getzy and Derek LaFountain open. Tickets are $12 Adv/$15 DoS.

Ultra Pulverize Rescores Robocop

Club Show, Electronica, LMNEditor, Movies, Previews, Video  Comments Off on Ultra Pulverize Rescores Robocop
Nov 222014

Louisville’s synth-punk sci-fi rap trio Ultra Pulverize will recreate the entire soundtrack from the 1987 film, Robocop, at Headliners Music Hall on Wednesday, November 26; It will be a LIVE, full-length, electronic re-score, complete with with dialogue and sound effect samples from the film, and, as a statement against talking during movies, they will not be rapping. The reason for the tribute is simple – the band members were strongly effected by the film, which might have something to do with why they are referred to as ” A musical outfit with outfits” – they dress in costumes for their shows. Night Visions DJ will perform after the tribute.Tickets are only $10.

Here’s a video from Ultra Pulverize, but not abot Robocop:

Louisville Can t Get Enough? St. Paul And The Broken Bones are at Headliners for the fourth time this year.

Concerts, LMNEditor, Previews, Soul, Video  Comments Off on Louisville Can t Get Enough? St. Paul And The Broken Bones are at Headliners for the fourth time this year.

“The horn section is in crisp shirts and ties, and front man Paul Janeway wears a suit jacket and pocket square. But then Janeway’s thunderous voice takes over: a raspy, rafter-rattling soul powerhouse that propels him to shimmy his way across the stage like Mick Jagger at a backwoods tent revival.” – Matt Hendrickson, gardenandgun.com
I have a friend from Cincinnati, a former Public Radio DJ turned nurse and Flamenco dancer who is just crazy, I mean crazy, for St. Paul And the Broken Bones, who’ll be at Headliners on Saturday, November 22. The only thing keeping her from trekking down to Louisville tomorrow is her mother’s Ninetieth birthady, which is sufficient reason to keep most people close to home. The rest of us here in Derby City have to come up with our own excuses to miss the most authentic, non-imitative Southern soul band to come along since before we thought Alabama Shakes might somehow slide into that slot. The leader, vocalist Paul Janeway, manages to deliver the soul without getting lost in the surrounding fog of years of prior vocalists; in short, it ain’t fakery. They’ve been through town several times this year, so they seem to being building an audience. Thye’ve only got two EPs and a just releaed full-length, Half The City, so far, which isn’t bad, considering that they put this thing together in 2012. Tickets are $20 adv/ $22 DoS.

Here’s the official video for Call Me>

Leon Russell at Headliners

Leon_Russell
Leon Russell has gotten too long in the tooth to be up on a “Tight Rope,” but his piano-playing hasn’t deteriorated nor his singing and he’ll play “A Song For You,” along with any number of other tunes of his choosing when he comes to Headliners on November 15. Of course, you know that Russell has been an integral part of the American music business for thirty or forty years now, has played with so many famous musicians (including New Grass Revival) as a sideman that it’s pointless to try to list them. He has made many, many records, though while successful enough, they didn’t make much noise on the charts. He last played Louisville at last year’s Abbey Road On The River festival and was at Headliners the year before. Tickets to the show are $35 seated / $25 SRO. Dog House Kitchen will open.

Here’s a live fan video from the House Of Blues, Dallas:

Justin Townes Earle Returns to Headliners

Americana, Club Show, LMNEditor, Previews, Video  Comments Off on Justin Townes Earle Returns to Headliners
Nov 042014

Singer-songwriter Justin Townes Earle has a considerable track record here in Louisville, in terms to venues where he’s played. He first played at Air Devils Inn in 2007, then ear X-tacy records, St. Francis Of Assissi, Headliners, the Harbor Lawn on the Waterfront, Iroquois Amphitheatre, Forecastle and Kentucky Country Day (skipping over the repeats at Headliners). So it’s safe to say he has a fan base here, so we can bypass the history involving his father, Steve Earle, his drug abuse and his discography. He has a new record for your delectation, Single Mothers, so his setlist will change accordingly. Tickets to the show are $20. Cory Branan will open.

Here’s the title track from the new album:

Matt The Electrician, Justin Paul Lewis At Headliners

Nov 032014

Matt The Electrician returns to Louisville for the second time this year on November 6, to Headliners, still promoting 2013’s It’s A Beacon, It’s A Bell. It has been noted that the Austin-based singer-songwriter mirrors Townes Van Zandt at times, or perhaps Guy Clark or even Rodney Crowell in his writing. He’s also a Left Coaster (San Fran, Oregon) living in the only really blue part of the Lone Star State, working on his craft while raising a family. Besides that, he plays the banjo, Glockenspiel and Euphonium. Weird enough for you? Justin Paul Lewis will open. Tickets are $12 adv/$15 DoS.

Matt sings “Got Your Back”:
