It’s GWAR! Yup, it’s true, the monsters of metal are returning to Louisville to spew nasty, slimey, stuff all over you people! Ah, it’s good, er, clean fun! The legendary band will be in Louisville on Tuesday, October 21 at Expo 5 w/ Decapitated and American Sharks! This is gonna be a barnburner of a show. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen GWAR, I think it was at The Oasis about five years back. Maybe it’s time for me to see these cats again. I remember the first time I saw GWAR, I hid in the back to not get shit sprayed on me, but a giant Jesus ended up spewing goo out of a giant rubber schlong, all the way across Headliners to the back of the club, to hit me directly in the face. It was a helluva shot. The show is $20 and starts at 7 p.m. I think there will be local bands on the bill as well, so get there early.

Terry Harper has a five band metal show at Expo 5 scheduled for October 10, featuring Knoxville deathcore sextet Whitechapel, Upon A Burning Body and Glass Cloud, with local support from Eye Of the Storm and Sounds Like A Lawsuit. Whitechapel is riding high on the chart success of their 2014 Metal Blade Records release, Our Endless War, which hit #10 on the Billboard 200 chart, as well as reaching No. 1 on the US Hard Rock chart, making it their first chart-topper. Upon A Burning Body has also had some chart success, with their August release, The World Is My Enemy Now, reaching #3 on the US Hard Rock chart. Glass Cloud has released only one album, The Royal Thousand, which peaked at $21 on the US Hard Rock chart. Nevertheless, that makes three bands with some album success, so it should certainly draw some fans. Tickets are $18 adv/ $20 DoS.

Expo 5 Has All Time Low

It’s true that Expo 5 has All Time Low, but that’s a good thing if you are a pop punk fan. The Maryland quartet headlines a Terry Harper show at the 7th Street Road club on April 23, with Handguns and Man Overboard sharing the bill. They’re a hard-working, hard-touring bunch of guys, still supporting their 2012 album , Don’t Panic. You’re as likely to see them on the Warped Tour as in a club, so catch them in a club where the acoustics are better. Tickets for the show are $20.

For Today Fight The Silence Tour At Expo 5

Feb 222014

For Today
There’ll be some Christians mingling at Expo 5 on February 26, when For Today headlines a four-band show. Of course, the other bands – Stray From the Path. The Plot In You and Like Moths To Flames – do not tag themselves as Christian anything, so t17his is not strictly a Christian metalcore show; rather, it’s a mostly metalcore with punk and Christian overtones. In any case, For Today has a brand-new record, Fight the Silence, (also the name of the tour) on Razor and Tie; Stray From The Path offers Anonymous; The Plot In You is touring in support of their 2013 album, Could You Watch Your Children Burn and Like Moths To Flames has An Eye For an Eye, released in 2013 and , also released in 2013. Altogether, this is a tour with new music for your listening and dancing pleasure. Tickets are $18.

For Today Plus Four At Expo 5

Feb 042014

For Today
The hardest-working promoter in Louisville, Terry Harper, has cranked up his promotion machine for the spring run of shows. His February 8 show at Expo 5 is a five-act bill, with the Christian metalcore band For Today taking the headliner slot, courtesy of their new Fight The Silence album. You can expect that it will be loud in the quonset hut on 7th Street. Also on the bill are Fit For A King, The Plot In You, Stray From the Path and Like Moths To Flames. As often is the case with Harper shows, the headliner is very nearly irrelevant; what matters is the number of bands – seldom fewer than four – which keeps the usually young – and likely fickle – audience from getting bored. Then again, whoever is promoting the overall tour usually gets top billing. Tickets are $20 and it’s all-ages.

Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! Tosses Out Music At Expo 5

Chunk! No, Captain Chunk!
The French are unusual people – they like Jerry Lewis movies, hire people to sit in public places in Paris and kiss and believe that they are the most cultured people on the planet. Perhaps, but if Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! is any marker, their pop stars have been spending perhaps too much time studying American bands, at least with respect to naming things musical. Their newest album is Pardon My French; the name of the band came from a scene in The Goonies. Playing popcore, a style that mixes pop punk with hardcore and heavy metal, the band discovered that France was not receptive to their music, so they had to go to Britain, Australia and the United States to find fans. Their tours have been successful and they learned a lot of English on the road that they hadn’t learned in school. They’ll bring that sound to Expo 5, along with State Champs, Counterparts, Stay Fubar, Blindside Drop and Living With Lions on November 16, courtesy of a Terry Harper booking. Tickets are $15.

From their new album, Pardon My French, here’s “Restart”:

A Metalcore Trio Plus One at Expo 5: Trivium, Devildriver, After The Burial, Sylosis

Trivum
Devildriver
After The Burial
The trivium was the term for the three subjects that were taught first in medieval universities: grammar, logic and rhetoric. Trivium in modern America is a metalcore band from Florida, about as far from grammar, logic and rhetoric as you could get and still be on the same planet. Trivium asserts that their name explains the three-way intersection of metalcore, melodic death metal and thrash metal, none of which were to be found on the parchments of the old universities. The band, however, has sold many more records and is better known than those old schools. They have a new album, Vengeance Falls, just released on Roadrunner. Given that they have already sold over one million records, Vengeance should do well, especially since the band has made a practice of serious touring in support of their records. They’ll be at Expo 5 on November 15, playing tunes from that record as well as their older hits, along with frequent headliner DevilDriver, also with a new record, Winter Kills, Sumerian Records artists After The Burial (with new material) and Sylosis. It’s a quadrant of metal for fans. Tickets are $20.

Check out “Strife” from the new record:

Bleeding Through Heads Up Six-Band Show at Expo 5

Nov 012013

Bleeding Through
Expo 5 is clearly the place where Terry Harper likes to book his more outré shows, particularly those that might draw a bit of a rowdier crowd than a show at the Vernon Club or Diamond Pub might be up for. Harper’s November 5 show fits the bill, with Bleeding Through headlining a six-band tour, titled Farewell To The United States Tour, with Oceano, Six Feet Under, Sworn In, Winds of Plague and Gideon. We’re talking metal subgenres by the half-dozen: heavy metal, death metal, symphonic metal, metalcore and more. After the tour, Bleeding Through will disband, so you might want to catch them while you can. Tickets are $20.
