Look what Guided By Voices have done for the world since reforming in 2010. Six high-quality, full-length albums in less than four years. And that’s not counting EPs, singles, tours, or solo records. If the sorry state of the present day indie- alt- or just plain rock landscape is the disease, GBV is the cure! Do not take in moderation.” – Contactmusic.com
What makes a true Guided By Voices fan? Someone who has all the albums? Knows all the various players? Thinks the band lost its way in 1997 by signing with Capitol Records? Mourned the “disbanding” in 2004 and celebrated the return in 2010? Who the hell knows? You do, if one of those fans; the rest of us might have a passing familiar with one or another of the many, many records or even have heard the early lo-fi stuff and thought it was cool – or not. They’re coming back to town to play Headlienrs on August 30, with Bobby Bare Jr. on the tour. The latest (as of this writing) is Cool Planet. Tickets are $23 adv/ $25 DoS.

Despite the ice and snow, folks are still intent on getting out and about. As usual, A Kentucky Newspaper has a Weekender-ish, Scene-like features section. Check out Joseph Lord’s chat with Louisville native Ben Thornewill, pianist, vocalist and songwriter for Jukebox the Ghost, scheduled to play a Dare To Care Benefit at Headliners on Saturday with Bobby Bare Jr. Editorial aside: your humble correspondent ran into Thornewill’s parents, Judah and Araby Thornewill, at a party last weekend. They said that it was “interesting” watching their son’s band climb to fame from the outside.

J.L. Puckett plugged the Stray Cats Band show at the Zeppelin Cafe tonight.

All the rest in the Features section is Christmas-related.

Louisville Music News Shows of Note for next week are here.

LEO’s Mat Herron has a story about the need for providing food for folks in Louisville who find themselves out of work and hungry. The focus is WFPK’s Dare To Care Fundraiser at Headliners on Saturday, featuring Bobby Bare Jr. and Jukebox the Ghost . Herron also plugs the Stray Cat show at the Zeppelin on Friday. Herron is one busy fellow: he reviewed Jubalson’s new EP Wake.

Over at the C-J, Peter Berkowitz writes about the future of ear X-tacy, which article might be in Velocity.
