The Ataris Let You Call The Shots

Club Show, LMNEditor, Previews, Punk, Tours, Video  Comments Off on The Ataris Let You Call The Shots
Nov 202014

How often do you get to call the shots? Well, how about for The Ataris, who are stopping in at Headliners on the You Call The Shots Tour, along with Teenage Kicks, Fast Friends and Blacklist Royals, on November 21. The Ataris a band that began in Anderson, Indiana, who’ve been punkin’ and rollin’ for nearly a decade. As these things happen, the personnel changes have been frequent enough that the band is like the old farmer’s axe: hey, it’s the same axe/band. There’s one original member left, actually, They’ve got five studio albums, includng one certified gold (So Long, Astoria) back in 2009. They’ve managed one chart single, “The Boys Of Summer,” in 2003. In short, it’s a journeyman rock band. For this tour, the fans will pick the songs, as advertised. Tickets are $15. It’s an 18-and-over show.

Nick & Knight, Not Nick At Night, At The Mercury Ballroom

Concerts, LMNEditor, Pop, Previews, Tours, Video  Comments Off on Nick & Knight, Not Nick At Night, At The Mercury Ballroom
Sep 132014

“With their eponymous album released on Monday and their national tour starting later this month, the two insist not only on their own bankable stardom, but also on the importance of the sound they helped create. And yet, to look at the duo’s respective career trajectories, and the astoundingly generic quality of their album, Nick & Knight showcase a sad, strange take on a certain kind of masculinity, and thus the whole boyband genre: though pretty and well-choreographed, the duo are aggressive and desperate in their attempt to assert their own importance, and assure us that they’re not impotent. ” – Jennifer Garson, The Guardian (UK)

Take one Back Street Boy and one New Kid On The Block and together you get Nick & Knight, a collaboration between  Nick Carter and Jordan Knight. With a brand-new Nick & Knight album, they’re on tour and will hit the Mercury Ballroom on September 17. The album, which features songs written by committees of noted writers, has done well enough to peak at No. 24 on the U.S. Chart so far. Of course, these two still have fans, most of whom at headed into their thirties, who’ll come out to see them, no doubt. The whole shebang is one professionally engineered, produced and staged event, so it’ll be a thouroughly current pop show that should appeal  to those fans. The critics? No so much. Tickets are $45 + $13 fee.

Spanish Gold On The Waterfront

May 242014

My Morning Jacket drummer Patrick Hallahan and his new band, Spanish Gold, get the headlining spot for WFPK’s Waterfront Wednesday show on May 28. The upside for Hallahan is that membership in MMJ (and the associated fan base) will transfer to his new band, at least for this show, but there’s a bit of downside as well: the band’s first album, South Of Nowhere, has only just dropped and the all tunes the band will be playing will be relatively new to the Louisville audience, though some will be a bit familiar via WFPK. Word is that it’s a straight-ahead summer rock album and with a couple of Texans for bandmates, the flavoring should be quite different from MMJ. Also on the bill are The Broken Spurs and Peter Searcy’s reunited Starbilly, which will make it absolutely a roots rock ‘n’ roll show, which is not your routine FPK lineup. Wear your dancing shoe, to be sure. It’s a free show, of course.

Bleeding Through Heads Up Six-Band Show at Expo 5

Concerts, Heavy Metal, LMNEditor, Nu Metal, Previews, Tours, Video  Comments Off on Bleeding Through Heads Up Six-Band Show at Expo 5
Nov 012013

Bleeding Through
Expo 5 is clearly the place where Terry Harper likes to book his more outré shows, particularly those that might draw a bit of a rowdier crowd than a show at the Vernon Club or Diamond Pub might be up for. Harper’s November 5 show fits the bill, with Bleeding Through headlining a six-band tour, titled Farewell To The United States Tour, with Oceano, Six Feet Under, Sworn In, Winds of Plague and Gideon. We’re talking metal subgenres by the half-dozen: heavy metal, death metal, symphonic metal, metalcore and more. After the tour, Bleeding Through will disband, so you might want to catch them while you can. Tickets are $20.
