This and That

A few Louisville music items to note:

Syd Bishop, who seems to be doing roughly 87% of all the music writing in town, has a couple of reviews in this week’s LEO: a review of Savage Master’s Mask Of The Devil and a review The Hookers’ latest aural assault, It’s Midnight….The Witching Hour.

Bishop also has an interview with Hunter Embry and Dave Chale, co-owners of the New Vintage, as his own site, Never Nervous.

There’s an unsigned review of the Tamerlane Trio’s Be It Ever So Humble in this week’s LEO.

:Pop Evil has made Louisville a favorite stop since at least 2008, when they played a Phoenix Hill show; they repeated that stop nearly ten times, before playing the Louder Than Life Festival in September. Now they’re back, but at the Mercury Ballroom this time, on December 12. They’ve got a fan base and they’re still supporting their latest record, Onyx, which also lends its name to the tour – Oynx Set In Stone Tour, so expect a nice turn-out. Islander and Red Sun Rising are supporting the show. Tickets are $15.

Black Veil Brides Headlines Four-Band Show At Expo 5

Terry Harper kicks off your glam metal, hard rock, metalcore December with a show at Expo 5, featuring Black Veil Brides, Setting It Off, Falling In Reverse and Drama Club, on December 2. Originally from Cincinnati, BVB has relocated to Hollyweird and revamped the costuming to be more in line with what’s current there. They’ve been working since 2009, have released four albums, including the most recent, Black Veil Brides IV, out this last October. Along the way, they’ve picked up a few awards, mostly from various metal publications, but enough to demonstrate that they are not just a flash-forward KISS ripoff.
Falling in Reverse is a post-hardcore act from Las Vegas; their touring in support of the second album, Fashionably Late. Tampa’s Set It Off is supporting their brand-new effort, Duality Tickets are $25.

Halestorm On Mercury? Not Quite But Close

Nov 182014

Halestorm – fronted by the red-headed Lzzy Hale – returns to town for the fourth (or fifth) time, this one tonight (November 18)at Mercury Ballroom, a slight sidestep and, perhaps, step up, from Headliners. Of course, this is a hard-working touring band, doing as many as 250 shows a year, so they have their shows down solidly. The single “Freak Like Me” hit the top of Billboard’s Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks in April 2012, but they haven’t had a serious chart record since. They appear to be working on a new record, though information is hard to come by. Look for new tunes at this show. New Medicine opens. The ticket prices also reflect their success – $25+$5.25.

GWAR Coming To Expo 5

Oct 162014

It’s GWAR! Yup, it’s true, the monsters of metal are returning to Louisville to spew nasty, slimey, stuff all over you people! Ah, it’s good, er, clean fun! The legendary band will be in Louisville on Tuesday, October 21 at Expo 5 w/ Decapitated and American Sharks! This is gonna be a barnburner of a show. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen GWAR, I think it was at The Oasis about five years back. Maybe it’s time for me to see these cats again. I remember the first time I saw GWAR, I hid in the back to not get shit sprayed on me, but a giant Jesus ended up spewing goo out of a giant rubber schlong, all the way across Headliners to the back of the club, to hit me directly in the face. It was a helluva shot. The show is $20 and starts at 7 p.m. I think there will be local bands on the bill as well, so get there early.

Mötley Crüe And Alice Cooper at Yum!

Concerts, Heavy Metal, LMNEditor, Previews, Video  Comments Off on Mötley Crüe And Alice Cooper at Yum!
Oct 102014

LMN Pitnews columnist Eddy Metal takes The Editor’s Blog chair for this show:
It looks like the infamous coke-snorting, heroin-doing, groupie-banging legendary rock band Mötley Crüe will finally head out to pasture. All I can say is, it’s about time. And no, I am not a hater! I love MC! But when performances slip and your singer sounds like total doody and doesn’t sing half of the lyrics, it’s time to re-evaluate your future. Nikki and Tommy are good to go, but poor old Mick with his spinal disease just can’t do this much longer. And MC is Mick Mars! So it wouldn’t be the same. And Vince just plain doesn’t have it anymore live. Some songs sound decent I admit, but on the old classics that are hard for anyone to sing, he suffers, er, the audience suffers. Dude sounds like a dying cat with pneumonia. But like I said, that shit is hard to sing! Trying singing the verses on key in “Shout At The Devil” and see how well you do! So with all due respect to The Crüe. I agree with this decision to retire the band. I’ve seen some seriously badass MC shows in the past, too. Almost every album tour all the way back to MC at Cardinal Stadium in 1984 with Ozzy. Classic.
So if you wanna see the guys one last time, now is your chance to see one of rocks raunchiest, nastiest, sleeziest and rockin’ metal bands ever! Get your tickets to this show October 14 at The KFC Yum! Center. Tickets are $20-$125.
BTW, Alice Cooper is opening! I saw Alice two years, ago opening for Iron Maiden in Indy and he was awesome! Alice still has the heart and abilty to kick some butt.
And there is a new band that kicks some serious butt opening the show: The Raskins, a band comprised of brothers Logan and Roger Raskin. These guys are high energy rock n’ roll, mixed with metal and a tad bit of punk thrown in for good measure. The band seems to be making some waves with their new twelve-song, self-titled CD. They just got off a tour with Scott Weiland and Saving Abel and are super-stoked about opening for Alice Cooper and Motley Crue. Who wouldn’t?
I posted a Raskins video for their song “We Had It All” below. Enjoy!
Here is some old MC in their heyday. Classic US Festival footage.

Get Some Finnish Power Metal From Sonata Arctica At Diamond Pub

Club Show, Heavy Metal, LMNEditor, Previews, Video  Comments Off on Get Some Finnish Power Metal From Sonata Arctica At Diamond Pub
Oct 082014

Are you ready for some Finnish symphonic, progressive metal? Really – that would Sonata Arctica, heading into Diamond Pub on October 12, along with Xandria, Fatal Step and Delain. Believe or not, there are quite a number of Louisville fans of European metal, including fans of Sonata Arctica, a band that has played Louisville several times in the past, mostly at the old Uncle Pleasant’s. Their album output now runs to eight studio recordings, plus a new re-release of their first, Ecliptica, as a 15th Anniversary Edition. They also do covers, ranging from Queen to Ozzy to Depeche Mode, so some of what you’ll hear will be familiar.
Not to leave out the other bands, Xandria is a German symphonic metal band with six albums to their credit while Delain is a Dutch symphonic metal band with four albums. Fatal Step is a Louisville metal “supergroup” of sorts, featruing members and ex-members of Abominant, Stonecutters, Ohlm, Assisting Sorrow and Sowing Discord. Tickets to this heavy-duty metal fest are $20-$65.

Expo 5 Hosts Whitechapel, Eye Of the Storm, Sounds Like A Lawsuit, Upon A Burning Body, Glass Cloud

Terry Harper has a five band metal show at Expo 5 scheduled for October 10, featuring Knoxville deathcore sextet Whitechapel, Upon A Burning Body and Glass Cloud, with local support from Eye Of the Storm and Sounds Like A Lawsuit. Whitechapel is riding high on the chart success of their 2014 Metal Blade Records release, Our Endless War, which hit #10 on the Billboard 200 chart, as well as reaching No. 1 on the US Hard Rock chart, making it their first chart-topper. Upon A Burning Body has also had some chart success, with their August release, The World Is My Enemy Now, reaching #3 on the US Hard Rock chart. Glass Cloud has released only one album, The Royal Thousand, which peaked at $21 on the US Hard Rock chart. Nevertheless, that makes three bands with some album success, so it should certainly draw some fans. Tickets are $18 adv/ $20 DoS.
