Deadly serious whimsy might be the best label for the collective called Of Montreal, which rolls into Headliners October 3. Supposedly named after a failed romance with a woman “of Montreal,” the band has moved from a peculiar mix of vaudeville, late-Sixties era Beatles and Kinks-style psychedelic pop to a (perhaps) equally odd mix of funk, glam, electronica and Afrobeat, with sides of folk rock and disco. They come by their eclectic tastes naturally, as the group comes from a larger collective called Elephant 6 (The Elephant 6 Recording Company), bound together by a shared admiration of Sixties pop. This also means that the bands tend to promiscuously share members, as well as exhibit a tendency to lyrical weirdness. They are on tour with Pillar Point, supporting their most recent record, Lousy With Sylvianbriar, and, presumably, their new DVD, a documentary called “The Past Is A Grotesque Animal.” The Deloreans will open. Tickets are $17 adv / $20 DoS.

St. Lucia, Joywave At Headliners

Indie electronic/synthpop artist St. Lucia, born in South Africa but now living in Brooklyn, is out on the road with his first album When The Night, with a tour titled The Night Comes Again . Basically a remixer, he’s paired with  the Rochester, NY, electronic indie rock band called Joywave. For this tour, he does seem to have a band.  Despite the fact that Joywave has only a single album, 2012’s Koda Vista, they have scored big with “Dangerous,” a collaboration with Big Data which reached the top of the heap on the US Alternative chart in 2012. Their next one, “Tongues,” featuring KOPPS, has done fairly well, with the NSFW video snagging 150,000 views as of July. Taken together, it’s tricky to decide which act should be the headliner, though St. Lucia is, as the producer. They’re at Headliners on September 26 and tickets are $15.
Here’s St. Lucia’s “Before the Dive”:

Tennis and Pure Bathing Culture at Headliners

All the hippest bloggers in town are all over the upcoming show featuring Tennis and Pure Bathing Culture at Headliners on September 19. The bloggers are  not alone in that regard – check these quotes: “An album of sumptuous indie pop…thick and gleaming.” – Stereogum (One of their 40 Best New Bands of 2013); “There’s an irresistible charm to the simple melodic structure and retro sixties-pop lyricism” – VOGUE; “Unfathomably lovely layered harmonies and tear-inducing minor-key guitar strokes” – MTV Buzzworthy.
And those are about Pure Bathing Culture, who are not even the headliners. That would be Tennis, which is the husband-and-wife team of Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley, purveyers of indie surf pop, which you can hear on their new album, the just-released Ritual in Repeat, their third. Tennis has recorded and released a number of covers, as well as their original material, which also makes them rather unusual. Their successes to date have included a couple of television placements, Gray’s Anatomy and Once Upon a Time. Tickets to the show are $10 adv/ $12 Dos, a cheap price for being able to say you saw them back when.

You’ve seen and heard them on television (The O.C., One Tree Hill, Ugly Betty, 90210, Letterman) and in commercials (Ice Breakers, AT&T), not so many films(yet) and back in ‘08 at Headliners. They’re the husband-and-wife team called Mates Of State, who do “not normal” things with their music. which is pop with some EDM and dance overtones/undertones. They’re currently on an April tour, which will end at Headliners on April 18. Watch the video below for a sense of what these two are about, which is still promoting their last record, Mountaintops. Tickets to the show are $15.

Here’s the official video for “Palomino”:
