“Waylon Jennings … was one of the band’s musical heroes, and they jumped at the chance to work with him. Yet for 17 years the songs — frontman Rhett Miller’s “The Other Shoe” and bassist Murry Hammond’s “The Iron Road” — sat on the shelves, largely unheard. What Miller calls the band’s “holy grail” finally saw light as a limited edition vinyl single in April, and promptly sold out.” Andy Langer, Texas Monthly
Big D’s favorite alt.country band The Old 97’s are back out on the road with a new album, Most Messed Up, to promote; they’ll be stopping at Headliners on October 14. They’ve been at it since 1993, with ten albums to their credit; unfortunately, they’ve never quite reached the level of success that the music press and, more importantly, the record labels, have expected. Lately, though, they’ve been getting a number of placements in movies and on television, which helps the old bottom line as well as exposing the music to new fans. Lead singer Rhett Miller has released four solo albums as well, so all together, there’s plenty to get fans to their show. That and the fact that they’ve been here six times since 2009, most recently for last June’s Waterfront Wednesday show, when they were the headliner. The David Wax Museum will open. Tickets are $17 adv.$20 Dos.

The September 25 show at KRC Yum! Center will give country fans a bit of the “real” country that so many have been lamenting the loss of on the charts. That would be Dwight Yoakam, of course, who’s not the headliner - Eric Church is, with the Brothers Osborne the third at. Church is a rocker turned country rock singer, which is not too much of a turn these days. He’s touring in support of The Outsiders, his fifth studio album. A winner of several CMA and ACA Awards, he’s currently nominated for Album of The Year for The Outsiders and Song of the Year for “Give Me Back My Hometown.” The Brothers Osborne have a new, just-released EP, Brothers Osborne. Dwight Yoakam is touring in support of 3 Pears, so there’ll be plenty of merch. Tickets run $25 – $59.50 plus fees. UPDATE: Rolling Stone has a new interview with the Brothers Osborne here.

Drive-By Truckers, North Mississippi All-Stars at Iroquois Amphitheater

Oh, yeah, here’s your Southern roots-rock / blues-rock / country blues blowout for the month: Drive-By Truckers and the North Mississippi All-Stars at Iroquois Amphitheater on September 12. Both of these bands have their roots solidly planted in the Deep South (Alabama, Mississippi) and in the Deep South’s music by way of inheritance: DBT founder Patterson Hood is the son of bassist David Hood of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, while NMAS’s brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson’s father was the Memphis musician and record producer, Jim Dickinson. For a while, Duwayne Burnside, grandson of R. L. Burnside, played second guitar in the band. If all that name-dropping doesn’t convince you that these guys likely come by their music naturally, you are just unconvinceable by choice. In any case, this is a concert featuring some mighty fine Southern blues rockers.
The Drive-By Truckers are on the road promoting their newest, English Oceans. The North Mississippi All-Stars are touring in support of their sixteenth record, World Boogie Is Coming. Tickets are $27 adv / $30 DoS.

June Waterfront Wednesday: The Old 97 s, The Whigs, Dawn Landes

Americana, Country-rock, indie rock, LMNEditor, Outdoor Show, Previews, Video  Comments Off on June Waterfront Wednesday: The Old 97 s, The Whigs, Dawn Landes

“... The Old 97’s, the Dallas bar band who played a starring role in the ‘90s “alt-country” boom, didn’t die before they got old. Or, well, before they got middle-aged. On the first song from the new album Most Messed Up, the 43-year-old Rhett Miller sings about how his band stuck together “for longer than you’ve been alive”—you being the hypothetical teenage rock fan. —Spencer Kornhaber, The Atlantic
“For their fifth album, the Athens-bred/Nashville-based power trio the Whigs wanted to find the exact midpoint between raw and rehearsed. After more than a decade together – during which they’ve released four critically lauded studio albums and toured constantly as either headliners or openers for the likes of the Drive-By Truckers, Kings of Leon, and MGMT - the three members all agreed that they wanted to flex their muscles a bit: write some good songs, get them down as tight as possible, hit , and tear shit up. —North Star”
“The precise difference between Dawn Landes and her talented sisters eludes me, but there is a difference. And I know it because songs I dismissed as merely pleasant had an odd way of insinuating themselves into my day. And not just one. Three or four. There’s something she does that involves a secret sauce…”—Jesse Kornbluth, Huffington Post
Oh, boy, the Waterfront Wednesday show for June is good ‘un; it’ll feature The Old 97s, The Whigs and Louisville native Dawn Landes. Dallas-based The Old 97’s is an alternative country band which started back in 1993. Since then, they have ten studio albums, two full extended plays, shared split duty on another and have one live album. Their most recent release is Most Messed Up. They’ve been making rock ‘n roll long enough to rock out in their sleep and have a fan base here, with six shows in the last five years in the Derby City. The Whigs, on the other hand, have played a baker’s dozen shows in Louisville since 2007, making them the most popular of the three acts? Maybe. Then there’s Dawn Landes, who hasn’t been here since 2011. Currently living in New York, Landes has a new album, Bluebird, which has been described as a break-up record, as it follows here divorce from Josh Ritter. All that talent for free on the Big Four Lawn, Waterfront Park, on June 25. Ain’t Louisville a great place to live?

Turnpike Troubadours Are The Ones To Watch At Mercury Ballroom June 26

Concerts, Country, Country-rock, LMNEditor, Previews, Video  Comments Off on Turnpike Troubadours Are The Ones To Watch At Mercury Ballroom June 26
Jun 212014

“[The Turnpike Troubadours] are easily one of the best new country acts on the road. I’d like to say they’ll make it big in country music. But I can’t — at least until ‘making it big in country music’ doesn’t mean stealing guitar licks from 1980s hair bands and stringing dead-tired cliches into rhymes.” – Joe Holleman, St. Louis Post-Dispatch
As a former resident of East Texas, the Turnpike Troubadours’ first album title, Bossier City, has a special resonance: Bossier City, Louisiana, is on the bank of the Red River, opposite Shreveport, and is, accordingly, the “Sin City” part of that metropolitan area. It was also the place where young men seeking adult adventure headed from all around the area, including East Texas. Accordingly, that album title promises illicit pleasures, with a large side of sleaze. Anyway, The Turnpikers are a country band (of course) from Oklahoma that works the “Red Dirt” circuit of the South and their country is not Nashville-style pop country – nope, this stuff is roadhouse country, familiar to anybody who grew up in the South before 1990 or so. They’re still touring behind Goodbye Normal Street and will be at the Mercury Ballroom on June 26 with American Aquarium. Tickets are $12 plus $4 fee.s

Sounds like a bar song to me: “Gin, Smoke, Lies:
