The final Waterfront Wednesday of 2014 will feature the delicious Boston band Lake Street Dive plus Sean Rowe and The 23 String Band. Lake Street played The New Vintage last February, on a Monday when it was in the teens, with ice and snow on the ground. The house was sold out, bringing a mixed group of people of all ages in to hear them. WFPK has been playing their music since, so expect a really big crowd. New York alt singer/songwriter Sean Rowe is touring in support of his latest, Madman. The 23 String Band will be playing tunes from their latest, Bangin’ And Clangin’. It’s a show, of course. On the Big Four Lawn at Waterfront Park, September 17. Mind the construction work.

Time For Morris Day? August 15

Morris Day & the Time with Unlimited will take the second free show spot at Cardinal Stadium on August 15, as part of the 2014 Kentucky State Fair. Day started out his music career as a member of a high school band with Prince, which is not a bad way to start. His various successes privoted on Prince’s actions: the Time’s most visible period was in 1984, when Day appeared in Prince’s feature films “Purple Rain” and Graffiti Bridge.” The Time’s first No. 1 hit came in 1990, with “Jerk Out,” from Pandemonium. His career waned afterwards but he continued to work for a while, before retiring. He came out of retirement in 2000 and has been working steadily since, with his most recent album being 2011’s Condensate.

Umphrey s McGee Jams At Iroquois Amphitheater On Thursday

Concerts, Jamband, LMNEditor, Outdoor Show, Previews, Video  Comments Off on Umphrey s McGee Jams At Iroquois Amphitheater On Thursday
Aug 112014

Well, the fact of the matter is, either you like jambands or you don’t and if you do, you usually like on in particular. The boys in Umphrey’s McGee are well aware of that, and, like The Grateful Dead, the founding fathers of jambands, they let anybody record their shows, they never play the same set twice and they are influenced by any and everything they hear. In addition, they fool around with different instrumentation and different styles of songwriting. If think Jerry Garcia and David Grissom was a match made in musical heaven, this show is for you. They’ll be at the Iroquois Amphitheater, touring in support of their newest, Similar Skin, on Thursday, August 14, a very busy day in Louisville for music. Tickets are $22.50 adv/ $25 Dos

Heres’ their performance of “Wappy Sprayberry” at Red Rocks on July 5, 2014:

Jul 292014

Here’s a bluegrass show to stretch your budget: a fundraiser called Creekside Jam, at the Humana Grand Allee in Beckley Creek Park, featuring Sam Bush and Band, Rhonda Vincent & the Rage and Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder. Good lord, you might gasp – how could that big a show be out in a park nobody knows about? But that’s just you, Bucky, not paying attention. It’s all part of the Parklands of Floyds Fork in eastern Jefferson County that’s been under construction for some time now. This show is for the Beckley Creek Park section and is expected to bring in some heavy hitters from around the metro. (They hired the heavy hitters for the bluegrass.) No need to detail the history and status of Bush, Vincent and Skaggs – if you don’t know, then this show is not likely to interest you. On August 1. Tickets are $55 adv/ $65 DoS.

Jamey Johnson At 4th Street Live!

Ex-Marine and singer-songwriter Jamey Johnson will play a show at 4th Street Live! on July 25. Johnson, who has had a number of cuts by other artists, hasn’t done quite as well on his own – at least sales-wise – although he has won a number of ACM and CMA Award and been nominated for Grammy Awards several times. He eschews the clean-cut look of most contemporary male country singers, instead favoring a large, dark beard which suggests he is a fan of David Allan Coe. He is most certainly a fan of old country; his most recent record is Living for a Song: A Tribute to Hank Cochran. It’s an almost-free show – there;s a $5 cover charge.

Lauryn Hill At Iroquois Amphitheater

Concerts, LMNEditor, Outdoor Show, Previews, Urban, Video  Comments Off on Lauryn Hill At Iroquois Amphitheater
Jul 182014

These days, buying a ticket to a Lauryn Hill concert is basically like buying a lottery ticket-you’re either going to end up a little more broke and a little more bitter than yesterday, or you’re going to strike gold. No question, Ms. Lauryn Hill is volatile. Her tours from recent years are littered with scathing reports of her chronic tardiness, distant affect, and inscrutable renditions. Reports from this tour have been somewhat mixed, but in general one of the greatest artists of the ‘90s has returned to form.” —Courtney Harrell, Denver’s Westworld.com
The Grammy winning rapper, singer, producer and former Fugees star Lauryn Hill is back on the road, including an upcoming show at Iroquois Amphitheatre on July 22. She has some need to work, having rather recently been in Federal prison for non-payment on income taxes, with the result penalites and such adding up to a considerable sum, which she has paid off. Be that as it may, the 1998 album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill remains her landmark (and only) solo effort, having sold some eight million copies and earning her five Grammy Awards, including Album Of The Year and Best New Artist. Following all that success, she dropped out public view to live a private life, only performing occasionally. In 2010, she returned to the stage, playing a few festivals and shows. Her tax evasions charges derailed that. Her current tour is with the agreement of the judge. Tickets to the show are $50, $60 and $80.
